How to use artificial intelligence in information searching

This guide covers the use of AI to support information searching in higher education. It also presents topics related to the responsible use of AI. It will be updated as necessary.

General information on responsible use of AI

  • consider data protection and copyright when using AI
    • do not give the AI any personal information, confidential or sensitive material, as it may store this information and use it to train the AI
    • do not present the material produced by the AI as your own
    • do not feed the AI material created by others without permission. Data from licensed databases acquired by the library, such as scholarly articles, must not be fed into language models or other AI tools. Please check the FinELib website for the user rights.
  • do not copy the answers provided by the AI anywhere without checking them
  • critically evaluate AI responses for bias and misinformation

SeAMK's policy on the use of artificial intelligence: Studying

SeAMK follows TENK's guidelines on responsible conduct of research . The use of artificial intelligence tools must be in accordance with good scientific practice. When using artificial intelligence, the practices of scientific writing must be followed. The works must be the author's own, and they must not present ideas, information or other material of others without adequate reference. Using language models requires consideration and caution, as artificial intelligence can make mistakes and, for example, make up some of the source data. In addition, it may provide plagiarised text and it cannot find the latest publications. From the point of view of learning, the text produced with the help of artificial intelligence does not replace the proofs of learning created through the student's own thinking and language production.

SeAMK's starting points for the use of artificial intelligence -assisted language models are as follows:

  1. In principle, the use of language models is allowed as a tool, the application of which is good to familiarise yourself with. If the student uses a language model, he/she must express both the name of the language model and the method of use in writing in his/her output.
  2. There are APA7 guidelines for marking sources, which are presented in the Guidelines for Written Works. The source marking for the text produced by artificial intelligence is done based on the source marking instructions of the computer programme and mobile application:

  1. Theses, learning tasks, publications and other study reports must be written by yourself, and texts produced entirely with language models are not accepted for passing the course.
  2. The student/ staff member is always responsible for his/her own text and other contents. Thus, when using the language model, it must be taken into account that it can make mistakes, create contradictions and, for example, invent source information, the answers may be biased, geographically limited, etc. Source criticism is very important.
  3. It is possible to use the language model, for example, as a text maintenance aid for better linguistic expression.
  4. The possibilities, challenges and application of language models should be opened up to students as part of studies/courses.
  5. In assignments and evaluations, it is taken into account that the application of the student's own field and own knowledge, as well as the reflection of competence, is clearly shown. The teacher gives instructions on how to use artificial intelligence in the course assignments and how to report the use of it.
  6. If a student uses a large language model in a learning task where it is prohibited in advance, or if he/she does not report the use of the language model according to the instructions, it is considered as fraud and is treated according to the same principles as other cases of fraud.
  7. You may not enter sensitive information into the language model (e.g. personal information, company secrets, interview information, etc.).
