Information about recognition of competencies at Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences

Student-centred studification

This document describes the key concepts, stages, and practices of student-centred studification.  It also includes the study counsellors’ contact information and an electronic form related to studification.

Also read about different demonstrations of competence. Demonstrations of studification are implemented in various ways by the degree programmes. Demonstrations may relate to one course or several courses, e.g., during a demonstration day. You get more detailed information on the implementation of studified courses from the study counsellor. In studification, knowledge, skills, and attitudes are present in the same environment, i.e., work.

In studification, that work can be salaried or voluntary; it can be the student’s own or their family’s business, or it can be related to leisure activities. Studification starts from the student’s own initiative. To apply for studification requires the student is able to perceive their work as a whole and to consider it from the perspective of competencies. Studification is an alternative way of completing studies.

What is studification?

The studification of work is an alternative way to develop competencies in a systematic and target-oriented way. In it, competencies required for earning a degree are acquired through work which includes all the learning goals defined for the course. At the same time, questions rising from practical work and theories guiding the work are integrated.

In studification, the student becomes familiar with the theory, works, and demonstrates their competencies during their studies.

The studified courses are assessed through various demonstrations of competencies. Their assessment is based on the assessment criteria of the course(s) in question; as a rule, the scale is 1–5. The student may be asked to complete their demonstration, or it may also be failed.
