Instructions for Bachelor's Thesis

Assessment

Supervising teachers must see to it that the thesis writer has been informed of the principles, criteria and procedure of the assessment of the thesis. Assessment is based on the criteria of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences ( (Appendix 7).

A thesis can either be passed or failed. A passed thesis is assessed on a scale of 1–5. For the lowest grade (1) or the highest one (5), a statement by two evaluators is required. In the final grading of the thesis, attention is also paid to the thesis process as a whole. In pair and group work, the part made by each student is evaluated separately.

A finished thesis is assessed by the supervising teacher. If the thesis is supervised by more than one person, its assessment is done in cooperation. At some Faculties, peer evaluators at seminars and/or working-life representatives may give their own assessment, but the supervising teacher is always responsible for the final grade. The thesis process may also include the student’s self-assessment (Appendix 8). Furthermore, it is agreed on, depending on the academic field, if feedback is requested from the commissioner or partner, and whose responsibility it is to request it. There is a model for the commissioner’s or partner’s feedback and assessment form in Appendix 9. The commissioner’s or partner’s feedback is important for the student and can be indicatively exploited when defining the grade of the thesis.

If the student is not satisfied with the assessment of their thesis, they can file a request for rectification. The request for rectification shall be made within 14 days from the date on which the student has had the opportunity to learn of the results of the assessment and the assessment criteria to their thesis (Ammattikorkeakoululaki 932/2014, 57 §). The request for rectification is submitted to the teacher who administered the assessment. The teacher processes the request for rectification together with the Head of Programme. The decision on the filed request for rectification shall be made within two weeks from the date on which the person who administered the assessment learnt of the request for rectification.

A student not satisfied with the decision on their request for rectification can appeal to the Examination Board of the University of Applied Sciences (Ammattikorkeakoululaki 932/2014; Valtioneuvoston asetus ammattikorkeakouluista 1129/2014). The appeal to the Examination Board of the University of Applied Sciences shall be made in writing within 14 days from the date on which the student learnt of the decision. The appeal to the Examination Board of the University of Applied Sciences shall be made in writing within 14 days from the date on which the student learnt of the decision. The appeal is filed to the Examination Board of the University of Applied Sciences  and delivered to the SeAMK Admission and Student Services. A decision made by the Admission and Student Services in a rectifying procedure concerning the assessment of study attainments cannot be appealed against in court (Ammattikorkeakoululaki 932/2014).
