Practical Training Support
The aim of student counselling is to support students so that they can achieve the goals of their studies and are able to make the right choices concerning their professional specializing and career planning. Student counselling is also aimed to help the students with the competence acknowledging process, the proceeding of the studies and with the possible problem situations related to their studies. Guidance will be provided throughout the studies. However, it is essential that the students are active and willing to get guidance.
Student counselling is student centred activity in which attention is paid to the differences between individuals. Student counselling involves all the measures that are taken to support students’ commitment to their studies and the fluent proceeding of the studies. In addition, student counselling is aimed to prevent difficulties in studies and thus also dropouts. Counselling is given before and during the studies and also when they are ending.
Study Entitlement and Registration as a Student
The period of study entitlement gives the basis for planning one’s studies: for studies of 210 credit points study entitlement is 3.5 years, and for studies of 240 credit points it is 4 years. The maximum time that can be spent on a Degree is plus one year. After that, if a student can guarantee that the studies can be completed within one academic year, it is possible for the student to apply for some extra time for completing the degree. This is, however, subject to a fee and the application has to be submitted before the end of the extended time for studies. If not graduating within the given time, the student will lose the entitlement to study.
A degree student must enrol as present or absent for each academic year. Enrolling is done in the Peppi-system for the whole academic year. The neglecting of enrolling will result into the loss of the study entitlement. To get the study entitlement back, a student can apply for the re-entry of the enrolling, which is subject to a fee. Enrolling for the Courses
Students must enrol on all the courses through Peppi. Enrolling is important, because without it, it is not possible to complete or assess the course. Instructions for the enrolling can be found in the student’s Peppi instructions. Credit Transfer and Competence Acknowledging It is possible for the student to transfer to the degree the credits gained elsewhere before the studies or during them. This may concern studies, practical training, work experience or some other kind of competence. The students will assess their competence in relation to the goals of the degree or course, and based on the self-assessment they will choose the competences they wish to get acknowledged. The students will apply for the competence acknowledging and give the required evidence of the competence in question. The principles of student counselling are:
Individuality. The student is entitled to get counselling throughout the studies when necessary.
Confidentiality. Student counselling is based on a confidential relationship between the student and the student counsellor.
Professionalism. Student counselling is given professionally and paying attention to the current situation.
Result orientation. Student counselling advances the students’ studies and helps them with the challenges concerning their studies.
There is counselling available throughout the studies and it has to be sufficient and meet the needs of a student.
Student counselling is available for all students. The students of Open University of Applied Sciences (UAS) and the students attending specializing courses will get counselling concerning the studies they have chosen. For exchange students, counselling concerning their studies will be given by the people working at the International Education Services.
